About us

Goal

The “Save the Währing Jewish Cemetery” association, founded in 2017, has set itself the goal of making the culturally and historically significant Währing Jewish Cemetery accessible to the public again. This cemetery is a unique testimony to the city’s past from a time when Jews and non-Jews lived together successfully.

As a burial place for all members of the Jewish community in Vienna at the time, the Jewish cemetery in Währing is a reflection of the section of the population that boosted the industrial revolution, had a significant influence on the culture of the Ringstrasse and the development of a modern society, supported the establishment of a social infrastructure and played a major role in shaping science and the arts.

The renovation of the gravestones and later the restoration of the paths will be carried out in close cooperation with the Federal Monuments Office and the Jewish Community. The scientific advisory board consisting of historians, the Federal Monuments Office and representatives of the Jewish Community will ensure that the Halacha, the religious law of the Jewish faith, as well as scientific and monument protection aspects are taken into account during the planned restoration work.

Nazis, war, weather and decades of neglect have left their mark. After years of struggle, a coalition of rescuers has been established. We see it as our cultural responsibility to preserve this historical jewel for posterity. The Republic of Austria and the City of Vienna are doing their part. The association “Save the Jewish Cemetery Währing” would like to raise the rest. Let’s help realize this project together!
