Current status of the renovation work

The renovation work, which began in 2019, reached a milestone at the end of 2025: the entire area to the left of the “Hauptallee” with approx. 6,400 m2 and approx. 2,500 gravestones has been completed (colored green in the graphic).

In 2019, archaeological excavations were carried out in two sub-areas (TF2 + TF3), which provided valuable information about the original terrain levels.

Renovation steps:
After clearing the last areas of overgrown vegetation at the end of 2019, a virtual image of the entire cemetery was captured using a 3D laser scan. Based on this, site plans are created, which are compared with nature in several passes. Inscriptions are compared with the occupancy lists and stone assignments, numbering and a classification system are developed.

Starting from the Tahara House, partial areas were then systematically renovated one by one (see diagram).

When renovating individual gravestones, the stones are first cleaned and limestone or sand-lime bricks are consolidated. Then cracks and fissures are professionally sealed and missing areas are filled. Finally, the individual elements of the gravestones are pinned together and erected in a stable position.

In addition, all work steps are documented photographically and in writing, assigned to the respective gravestone.
